Walkthrough

Ok, so i managed to get my dad who is not a gamer at all to navigate around my level while i recorded it. He picked up the basic controls using a keyboard and mouse and looks like he successfully navigated around without to much thought.

It was interesting to see what he noticed, what drew his attention and what didn’t.

I feel happy with how he got around and he didn’t have any complaints other then he felt the cabinets in the centre of the saloon felt a little like an obstacle.

Art Direction Change

Ok so maybe i should have posted this earlier but here we go now. Originally the brief started out using a vector/ cell shaded art style. I did some tests with this kind of style but once the objects started to get more complex to many shaders where requred making the shapes hard to make out. The other issue was also with lighting since shadows didn’t quite sit right.

So i changed the work to contain textures made from photos. This allowed for more depth and help to create a greater mood in the scene.

The Engine

Here is my engine that i used for the Nautilus and a video of its animation. Its a shame that it would not export from maya so i could actually get it running in unreal. I tried for a few days to get it to work and decided i was losing to much time on it so i just moved on.

The Failed Diver

For some unexplainable reason the animation worked fine in maya but will not translate at all to unreal. Its the exact same rig as the one used for Nemo so i know the rig is fine. The only thing i can imagine is its the fact that i have parented the helmet to it. Will compine the mesh and rerig the model now the painting weights issue has been solved. Anyway, here is a video of him not working and working.
